In January of that year graduation was quick and then off I went to the US Army! I visited many states, and three overseas countries; Germany, Romania, and of course the infamous Iraq. I would had not survived without the education that I received from this school. Though I was a transfer from The High School of Art and Design where I fell in my duties as an Artist. I did prevail at this institution. I'm now retired from my service to my country, but I want to thank the teachers there for their service to me and the other students that attended class. I lived at 460 Grand Street at the time, and if anybody remembers me from this time you can reach me on Facebook. By the way does the school knows if my art work is still there? |

I am looking for this guy by the name of Gibert Gonzalez, he had a brother named David and a sister. I can't recall her name but they lived in 110 Stanton Street apt 10. His dad own a Spanish American grocery Store, same address.Between Essex Street and ludlow St. His mom was nice and he was the 1st boy who kissed me in the hallway, but I did not know how to kiss. I kept my lips closed and I was so nervous, I remember runing down the flight of steps to our apartment 7. He was the very 1st boy I had a crush on. I was 13 years old. The next year his dad sold his business and they moved away. I never saw him again. I would like to know how life has treted him. He had an older brother named David and a sister my age. I would bring her homework when she was absent.I myself went to Washington Irving H.S. my dads idea, no boys around to interrupt our studies. I can't get his stare out of my mind. We were at PS188 and than they opened a brand new school, JHS22 on Columbia St. and the 7th, 8th and 9th grades moved to our new school. I was in 7th grade and he was in 8th. Over the last weekend, I had decided to take a stroll on the first avenue from 6th street to Seward Park High School. This was my usual route. In rain, snow, or shine, I made sure that I had perfect attendance. A lot has changed since my graduation from Seward Park High School in 1984. The streets are busier now with so many new businesses that my spirit was filled with joy and optimism. To my surprise the school is still there. I thought it was closed many years ago. As I stood speechless in front of the black iron cast fence, a female student exited the building. I introduced myself, and inquired what was inside the building now. She replied with a big nervous smile that Seward was home to five different specialized schools. She is a 12th grader, taking Chinese during weekends. I wish we had more time to talk about my experience while at SPHS. I wanted to let her know how indebted I have been toward the most loving and caring teachers that I had met through Seward Park High School. I was new in America, 1982. English was my third language, rudimentary. I was enrolled in 10th grade following an interview with Dr. Zanine. I believe she taught chemistry. As usual, the school attracted first generation immigrants. There were handful of us from Bangladesh. I was literally touched by the very first question Ms. Siegel asked: “Foyzul, if you were the writer, how would you end this story?” This approach of teaching helped me realized the fact that I had indeed landed on “the land of the free”. Mr. Rieses’ style of teaching, again English literature, gave me the courage to delve into English language with much appreciation for its richness. The kind and loving teacher, Mrs. Palsgrove, ESL, instilled hope in me when she took particular interest to write a letter of recommendation so I could attend regular classes with the natives. When I feel down and discouraged, often I hear the sweet voice of Mrs. Acosta, guidance counselor, “You are a bright student, Ahmed. You will do fine.” I wish I had stored all the sweet memories of SPHS in a glass jar, so I could open it and stare at them with "a nervous smile". My educational journey has been a long and difficult one, from SPHS to CUNY and then to NYU for my masters in clinical social work. The challenges that I had faced as a new comer NY, and the encouragements that I had received from all the teachers, and friends/classmates at Seward Park High School, prepared me well for a comfortable life in America. The current state of SPHS and the surrounding neighborhood reinforced my faith, that if we strive hard, in time, we all do well. There is hope. Thank you. |

Senior Class V. P. Now reside in Portland, Me. I still have the 1949 year book, remember walking from Seward to our house on Cannon Street. everyday, quite a long walk, now I drive to wherever I have to be. Fond memories of SPHS and the lower east side. Still maintain contact with those friends even though we're all scattered around the country in different states.

I grad class of 82 from Seward Pk HS. I remember a few people from back in the day. There was alot going on back then . Just to finish high school was a challenge with out all the distraction of hanging out . The drop out rate was very high back then. Nobody wanted to be in class everyone wanted to hang out by the handball courts & by Seward Extension, if you can remember back then.Beleive it or not I still have the original year book . may not remember me at all cause there was alot of people in the class of 82 mostly oriental. Best day was when the swimming teacher got sick, and we didn't have to swim nude anymore. How the hell did they get away with that stuff. I remember you well, I still have my year book, and checked, and sure enough. we were in many of the same classes !! I am retired , and live in Florida !! I would return to NYC for something, anything that someone might have an idea to put together !!! I was glad to read you note, yes there are too many missing!! we had a large class, I remember at least 30 to 40 12TH grade homeroom classes, held in the auditorium!! GREAT MEMORIES !!! |

I currently live in Maryland. My wife, Dorothea, is gone now, but we had 50 wonderful years of marriage. My legacy includes 7 children, 20 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren with more on the way.
After graduating from Seward Park I went on to City College and became an engineer with the Navy. My career took me across the world, I sailed on many of our Navy's finest ships including the USS Missouri when she was retrofitted during the 80's.
I am interested in hearing from any of my classmates still surviving. |

The Class of '67 Reunion on June 25th was small but we had great fun. Thank you Marty for providing us with the best tourguide. 1964-67 were challenging times for our Seward Park's students and surrounding communities. Our country was chest high in the jungles of Vietnam. God bless all Vets that served and sacrificed during that era and those that are serving today. Hope we can get the Classes from 64-69 together for Reunion 2012. |

Mercedes Navarro has put together a class reunion for the class of 1980, however if you graduated a few years before or after, please join us. The event is on Saturday, August 14 - 7 pm to 10 pm at the Whiskey Trader located on 55th St between 5th and 6th Ave. The cost is $30 per person for a 3 hour open bar and a DJ but does not include food. If you dont drink, you can pay for soft drinks at the bar.
Bring your significant other and please pass the word to other classmates, It would be great to see where life has taken us and to catch up with old friends. |

I attended Seward Park HS from Sept 1965 till around May 67, I dropped out because I learned that I had to make up all the mandatory nude swimming classes I did not attend. At that time all the boys had to attend their swimming classes in the NUDE. Today that would be considered a form of sexual harassment but back then they said it was a dept of health rule. Does anybody know what came about that the mandatory nude swimming was banned? I would like to start a class action law suit but must find others to proceed.

I have great memories of my years on the basketball, track and handball teams when I attended Seward Park. I remember giving my girl friend, who later became my wife the white letter "S" I was awarded for being a star athlete on the three teams; she sewed it on her dark blue sweater. I was captain of the handball team. I am 92 years old and still remember it all. Where did the time go? (My daughter has made this entry for me.) |

I was a student at Seward Park High School from 1965 to 1968 and I have very fond memories.
I was glad to see the name of Dennis Barmore, who signed in Julu 6 of 2006. I also went to JHS 45 from 1963 to 1965. I still have the JHS 45 yearbook and Dennis is there. He and I were in the same classroom.

It has been years seen I reflected on my times at Seward. I guess I missed any planned reunuions and now that the school is closed; I it is a moot point. I had an awful lot of "growing up" experiences at Seward, and the hard work I put in eventually paid off. I welcome hearing from others who graduated around 1974 and wish you all well. |

I attened Seward Park HS. I lived in New York City for 31 years. I moved to Florida 8 years ago. The answer to Mr. Allan Katz , I believe that the candy store on Clinton and Stanton was Economy Store. It had all sorts of candies. It was like being in Candy Land. |

Hello to All from Gainesville, Florida. Miss the old friends. Took a trip passed the school in May 06. We originally lived on Pitt St., then on to Bklyn. My bride also graduated from Seward (Jenny Torres). My sister was an alumni from Seward and returned to teach Spanish (Elba Ortiz) at Seward
I went on to Vietnam (66), returned, NYPD (26 yrs.). The memories of Seward are so vivid. Regards to all!

The class of '76 bicentennial year. Great Dance, Soul and Rock Music. Taxi Driver, Rocky and Car Wash. All in the Family, Larvern and Shirley, Sanford and Son, and Happy Days. Time Square was free of the Disney Virus and Canal Jeans was on Canal Street. No Gap, no Starbucks and no Political Correctness.
It was a very good year. The memories of Seward Park High will always be in my thoughts and in my heart.
My daughter will be a Junior this fall at the New Design High School. It was nice and strange to walk the halls of Seward Park High again.

I was saddened to hear about the breakup of our SPHS. The legacy of successful SPHS alumni is among the greatest not only in NYC, but perhaps the entire USA.
I tell all my friends about the diversie mix of SPHS and how everyone seemed to get along just fine. It was a time when the musical taste of the students was as diverse as the ethnic backgrounds which we came from. A little Saturday Night Fever disco here , some Led Zep rock there, and even the growing punk rock genre with the Sex Pistols was to be heard on sidewalks surrounding SPHS, as supplied by those on break ( or cutting class) .
The teachers I had seemed to give their all towards the success of the students. My favs were Tony Andrisano (Art & TV/ Film Production) , Paul Cinco (Trig) and Hannah Hess (Journalism). Looking forward to hearing from those of you who were around from '77-79. Mainedit@Kronishsports.com |

I was one of the first African Americans from Harlem that attended Seward Park High School. I remember my years there for several reasons below.
1. James Minor and myself used to make announcements in the cafeteria, trying to resurrect the Senor Prom which had not been at SPHS for over ten years. We used the format of the then hot TV show, Rowan & Martin's Laugh In. We were successful and had a prom that year.
2. I was part of the then new SPHS academic program called Pre Tech.
3. I had a crush on Nancy Miller, who I had taken to my JHS 45 prom, but we drifted apart.
